Local Realtors Raise Funds for Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity

Real estate professionals with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty hosted a rummage sale fundraiser for Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, October 30, 2010. The sale raised $1,052 that will go toward Sea Coast Realty’s sponsorship of a Habitat home in Wilmington, NC.

The rummage sale was held at the Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty office located at 8821 E. Oak Island Drive in Oak Island, NC. Realtors from Sea Coast Realty’s offices in Oak Island and Southport, NC donated items for the sale. Their friends and family pitched in by donating more items for the sale. “We also had several local businesses donate different items that we sold raffle tickets for,” said Chloe Grant, Broker in Charge of Sea Coast Realty’s Southport office.

Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty would like to thank everyone who attended or made donations to the sale for their support. The sale was originally scheduled to take from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM, but Realtors had so many items that they stayed until 4:00 PM to sell the wealth of items.

By sponsoring a Habitat for Humanity home, Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty is committed to providing $60,000 in financial support and volunteer labor each week of the home build. This marks the fourth Habitat for Humanity home that Sea Coast Realty has been involved with. “It is an experience our agents and staff really enjoy,” said Sea Coast Realty president Tim Milam. “It involves great fellowship and really builds camaraderie, while helping a homeowner to get a leg up.”

Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity is one of 76 Habitat for Humanity affiliates in North Carolina and is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. To date, it has completed 116 homes in our area. For more information about Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, please visit capefearhabitat.org.

Sea Coast Realty Breaks Ground on New Habitat Home

On Saturday, September 25, 2010, a small crowd gathered in an empty lot on Corbett Street in Wilmington, NC. Despite the early hour, the group was buzzing with excitement, because soon a new Habitat for Humanity home would begin to take shape.

Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty associates, staff, and their families joined with representatives and volunteers from Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity to say prayers and well wishes before the ceremonial first shovels of earth were turned. When the ceremony ended, an army of volunteers armed with shovels, including the homeowner and her daughter, were hard at work digging the footers for the new home.

The new homeowners hope to be in their completed Habitat home by January 2011. The home is sponsored by Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty.

Sea Coast Realty Meets Future Habitat Homeowner

Meet Carol – a single mom and soon-to-be homeowner thanks to Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty, Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, lots of volunteers, and her own hard work.

When she’s not at her full-time healthcare job, you can find Carol earning 250 hours of “Sweat Equity” by working on other Habitat for Humanity homes. “She is a kind, dependable, hard-working lady who truly embodies the Habitat spirit,” said Jane Roberson, Director of Family Services with Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity.

Construction of Carol’s new Corbett Street home is scheduled to begin September 25, 2010. The home is sponsored by Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty and will be dedicated as the “Barbara Birkenheuer House” in honor of the Retired Executive Director of Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. By sponsoring a Habitat for Humanity home, Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty will provide $60,000 in financial support and volunteer labor each week of the home build.

Sea Coast Realty president Tim Milam pledged Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty’s sponsorship of this home at Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity’s 9th Annual Golden Hammer Pledge Breakfast in May 2010. The breakfast marked Executive Director Barbara Birkenheuer’s retirement from Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity after ten years of service. In honor of her leadership, Milam announced that the Habitat home Sea Coast Realty builds will be dedicated as the “Barbara Birkenheuer House.”

Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity helps families work toward the purchase of a home. Habitat constructs quality homes at a significantly lower cost than government or for-profit organizations. That allows it to provide no-interest, 30-year mortgages to qualified families. To help its families succeed, Habitat offers credit counseling, mentoring, and education programs.

Sea Coast Realty has sponsored three other Habitat homes since it began its involvement with Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity in 1997. Sales associates and staff from Sea Coast Realty’s Leland office also helped with construction of a Habitat home in Navassa in January 2010. Russ May, a sales associate from Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Realty’s Wilmington, N.C. office, is president of the Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.

“While sponsoring three homes in the Wilmington area, we have learned how valuable homeownership is to those who thought they would never own a home,” said Milam. “I cannot think of a more worthy housing organization.”
